Van Dieman’s Ink – Rainbow Scarab (November 2025 Ink of the Month)

Inspired by one of nature’s most mesmerising insects, Rainbow Scarab captures the shifting colours and luminous depth of the jewel toned beetles that inhabit forests, grasslands, and gardens across the world. These small but radiant creatures are known for their glossy, metallic shells that refract light into vivid greens, deep blues, warm reds, and unexpected flashes of gold. Their colours change dramatically depending on angle and sunlight, creating a living display of iridescence that has fascinated people for centuries.

Our November Ink of the Month reflects that same sense of motion and hidden gleam. Rainbow Scarab is a deep, vibrant green ink with a warm undertone that sets it apart from Sea Turtle. It has a strong red sheen that bursts to the surface on Tomoe River, Midori, and other high performing papers. The multichromatic shimmer moves through gold, green, and blue, and in certain angles reveals subtle rose pink highlights that are almost impossible to photograph but unmistakable in person.

Like its namesake, this ink shifts with its surroundings. In low light it settles into a rich, elegant green. Under bright light it glows with an energetic spectrum of colour, transforming with every tilt of the page. Pen recommendation: Medium, broad, and calligraphy nibs to fully display shimmer and sheen. Fine nibs are possible but will show a more restrained effect.
