Van Dieman’s Ink – Rainbow Scarab (November 2025 Ink of the Month)

The Rainbow Scarab (Phanaeus vindex) is one of the most striking members of the dung beetle family, native to North America, where it thrives in grasslands, open woodlands, and farmlands from the southern United States through Mexico and into Central America. This brilliantly metallic insect plays an essential ecological role, recycling nutrients and improving soil health by burying and breaking down organic matter. Males are often seen with a single curved horn, gleaming like bronze or emerald in the sunlight — a natural jewel of the forest floor.

Inspired by this iridescent wonder, Rainbow Scarab is a deep, vibrant green ink with a warm undertone and strong red sheen that shines vividly on high-quality paper. The multichromatic shimmer flows through gold, green, and blue tones, and in certain light reveals hints of rose pink that photographs can barely capture.

Like its namesake, this ink transforms depending on its environment, deep and regal in shadow, glowing with life and colour when the light strikes.
