Cerberus

Few creatures in mythology are feared as much as Cerberus.

The great hound of the Underworld stood eternal at the gates of Hades, allowing every soul to enter, but none to leave. With three watchful heads, each alert to a different threat, Cerberus was less a savage beast than an unyielding sentinel. His purpose was not cruelty, but certainty. Once the boundary between life and death had been crossed, there was no turning back.

Cerberus captures that quiet inevitability.

Its base is an ethereal blend of weathered mauve, ash-grey, subtle tans and muted lavender. The colour shifts gently across the page, creating soft, smoky transitions that seem to drift like mist through forgotten stone corridors. Darker pools gather with subtle blue-grey shadows, lending the ink an ancient, worn character.

Beneath this restrained surface lies its true nature.

A complex multichromatic shimmer moves constantly as the page catches the light. At one angle it burns with warm copper-red, evoking embers glowing deep beneath the earth. Turn the page and the same particles become luminous antique gold before finally transforming into spectral green, like ghostly fire dancing across the cavern walls of the Underworld.

No single colour defines Cerberus. It changes with every movement, never settling, always watching.

Belinda's artwork portrays the guardian in all three aspects at once. One head snarls in warning, another roars in challenge, while the central gaze remains fixed, calm and unwavering. Together they embody not rage, but vigilance. An immortal creature whose duty has never faltered.

The Myth Behind Cerberus

Cerberus is the legendary three-headed hound who guards the entrance to the Underworld in Greek mythology. His duty is simple but absolute: to allow the souls of the dead to enter the realm of Hades, but never to leave. Serpents coil through his mane, his tail is often depicted as a snake, and his terrifying presence makes him one of the most recognisable creatures of ancient myth.

Despite his fearsome reputation, Cerberus appears surprisingly often in Greek legends, usually as the final obstacle that heroes must overcome.

The most famous tale is Heracles' Twelfth Labour, in which he was commanded to capture Cerberus alive and bring him to the surface without using weapons. With permission from Hades, Heracles wrestled the great hound into submission through sheer strength before safely returning him to the Underworld.

In the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, the legendary musician soothed Cerberus not with force, but with music. His lyre enchanted the three-headed guardian long enough for Orpheus to descend into the Underworld in search of his lost wife.

Cerberus also confronts Aeneas in Virgil's Aeneid, where the Sibyl pacifies the hound with a honey cake infused with herbs, allowing them to pass into the realm of the dead.

Perhaps most famously in modern retellings, Persephone passes the guardian each year as she journeys between the Underworld and the world above, marking the changing of the seasons.

Far from being a mindless monster, Cerberus is the embodiment of duty. He is the eternal sentinel who stands watch at the boundary between life and death, ensuring that the natural order remains undisturbed.
