About Leatherwood

Leatherwood, Eucryphia lucida, grows as an understorey tree in Tasmania's wetter mixed forests and rainforests often in riparian areas. Leatherwood timber is hard, strong, moderately heavy, easily worked and has a very fine grain. Its name originated from the unusual flexibility of its green timber.

Appearance and Characteristics of Leatherwood
  • Pink to brown in colour
  • Occasional occurrence of red-heart effect in mature logs which produces a similar pattern and appearance to black-heart sassafras.

A protected species, sustainably harvested and closely monitored
  • The Leatherwood Tree is protected for the apiary industry, as its flowers create the distinctive tasting Leatherwood Honey
  • Logs cut from Leatherwood trees are sold under tender to woodworkers
Guarantee of Quality
  • Solid brass internal structure and sturdy timber make this pen incredibly durable
